Brisbane Metro construction will create 7000 jobs: deputy mayor

Cameron Atfield reports in the Brisbane Times (7.6.16) on details of the Brisbane City Council's plans to construct an underground 'metro' public transport system at a cost of over $1.5 billion.

'More than 7000 jobs would be created during the construction of the Brisbane Metro public transport system, the man charged with delivering the project claimed on Tuesday.

'Deputy mayor Adrian Schrinner, Brisbane City Council's public transport chairman, said the job figure would not only include construction workers, but also off-site employment.

'"I can announce today that, based on preliminary estimates, we expect that this project will create more than 7700 direct and indirect jobs for the city of Brisbane," he told the council chamber on Tuesday.

'Cr Schrinner said the figure was reached using methodology formulated by Queensland Treasury.'
