Newman denies rift with Police Union

‘Premier Campbell Newman has downplayed an apparent rift with the head of the Queensland Police Union, who has accused him of reneging on a $20 million resourcing pledge. QPU president Ian Leavers branded Mr Newman a liar in a scathing attack on Wednesday, saying the premier promised him the funds to staff the expansion of the state’s highly publicised Safe Night Out precincts from three to 15 locations. “I’ve been trying for over nine months to get this funding,” Mr Leavers told 612 ABC Brisbane. “I had a meeting with Campbell Newman, he promised me $20 million to fund the 15 across the state. Campbell Newman looked me in the eye and he lied to me.”’ (Kim Stephens, Brisbane Times, 21.1.15.)
