Newman to fight Canberra over disaster relief funding

Amy Remeikis reports in the Brisbane Times (1.12.14) that Premier Campbell Newman ‘is preparing to take another fight to Canberra, with the Queensland Government lobbying hard to avoid changes to national disaster funding. A Productivity Commission report into how funding is distributed following natural disasters has recommended federal payouts be reduced from 75 per cent of the repair costs to just over 50 per cent. If implemented, Queensland would be forced to make up billions to cover the funding gaps. Over the past six years, the state has paid $3.5 billion of the $14 billion disaster repair and rebuilding costs.’
