Matthew Knott reports in the Brisbane Times (30.5.16) on federal Labor’s announcement of dedicated funding to underpin research and protection measures to safeguard the Great Barrier Reef from the harmful effects of climate change.
‘A Labor government would spend an extra $380 million protecting the Great Barrier Reef from climate change, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will announce on Monday.
‘Labor is hoping the announcement will elevate the environment as an election issue after a week of debate about budget “black holes” and a backdown on pensions and the School Kids Bonus.
‘The decision follows controversial cuts to CSIRO’s climate science division and revelations that all mentions of Australia were removed from a United Nations report after an intervention by Australian officials.’
