Australians must unite against racism

‘Australians must unite against racism’ The Age, 1.8.15:

‘Today we have taken an unusual step – a call to action in support of Indigenous footballer Adam Goodes and against the racism inherent in the abuse he has suffered from a minority of fans of our national game. Our move reflects profound concern about the treatment that Goodes, who is apparently considering a premature end to his illustrious career, has been receiving from an ignorant, mean-spirited portion of our society.’

‘Cultural celebration can only be defined as provocation if those witnessing it are fearful or ignorant. It seems there’s still a lot of both in Australia. An education system that teaches both Indigenous and imported culture would stem that tide. Representation that extended beyond anomalies would also provide redress to a situation where “success” is still seen to belong to the white folk while “luck” is the provence of the few blackfellas that reach any height above the appalling statistics of many of their kin.’ (Tracey Holmes, ABC’s The Drum, 31.7.15)
