Brisbane council election: Quirk’s massive win shocks LNP, stuns Labor

Cameron Atfield reports in the Brisbane Times (19.3.16) on a surprisingly strong performance from the LNP’s council election campaign in Brisbane, which saw Graham Quirk returned with a comfortable majority for another four-year term as Lord Mayor.

‘It was not just Lord Mayor Graham Quirk’s victory on Saturday night that had Liberal National Party members and supporters genuinely shocked. It was the sheer scale of it.

‘The polls leading up to Saturday’s Brisbane City Council election – along with the feeling on the ground – pointed to a tight race between the Quirk-led LNP and Rod Harding-led Labor campaigns.

‘Instead it was a massacre and Labor must surely be left wondering just what went wrong.’
