‘Three-peat Palaszczuk’: why Queenslanders swung behind Labor in historic election

TJ Ryan Foundation Research Associate, Chris Salisbury, writes in The Conversation (2.11.20) about Labor’s win in the Queensland state election, with Premier Annastasia Palaszczuk securing a historic third term in office.

‘Queensland’s state election was always going to deliver an outcome for the record books.

‘This was Australia’s first poll at state or federal level contested by two female leaders. It was also the first state general election conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘Counting continues after record numbers of pre-poll and postal votes, and a handful of seats remain in doubt. Regardless, the Labor government has been returned with what looks like an increased majority in a history-making third term for Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

‘This shores up her political stocks in the continued battle with federal and state governments over border closures.’

Frecklington steps down as LNP leader in ‘deeply personal decision’

Sean Parnell reports in InQueensland (2.11.20) about the resignation of LNP leader, Deb Frecklington, after the party lost ground to Labor in the weekend’s state election.

‘As Annastacia Palaszczuk looks to the budget, Liberal National Party leader Deb Frecklington announces she won’t be staying on as opposition leader.

‘On election night, Frecklington had vowed to stay on as opposition leader and fight for another four years. But this morning, the Member for Nanango announced a change-of-heart, having spent a day with her family and no doubt canvassed LNP colleagues on their prospects.’

‘Frecklington kept her press conference short but still accepted blame for the LNP’s loss and sought the right to resign at a time of her choosing.’

‘“This is a decision that is deeply personal to me,” Frecklington said.’
