Toowoomba South MP John McVeigh to resign in two weeks

The Brisbane Times reports (13.4.16) on an announcement from the LNP Opposition that state member for Toowoomba South, John McVeigh, is willing to stand down from Parliament in a fortnight after gaining preselection for the seat of Groom at the coming federal election.

‘A Queensland MP who is trying to switch to federal politics will resign from his state seat on April 29.

‘Toowoomba South MP John McVeigh at the weekend won Liberal National Party preselection to contest the federal seat of Groom at the coming election.

‘”The LNP’s decision (to set a fixed resignation date) will give the state government a respectable amount of time to advise the Queensland Electoral Commission to prepare for a by-election,” Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg said on Wednesday.’
