‘Dear Premier’: advice on transition to government

‘One of your first priorities should be to ensure your government has the executive, organisational and administrative skills necessary to translate your election commitments into tangible outcomes. Attention to the four P’s: People, Process, Policy and Politics — will enable your government to ‘hit the ground running’. It will enable you to project competence, discipline and a clear sense of purpose from the outset.

‘There is no guidebook to tell you how you should seek to discharge your responsibilities as Premier, no specific training; nor preparation apart from your own personal and professional experience and discussions you may have had in the context of transition planning by your political party. We would encourage you to be open to advice that might be offered by those who have done the job before you — in Queensland as well as other State or Territory jurisdictions, in the Commonwealth, or elsewhere.’
