The role of the Speaker

Bronwyn Bishop’s extravagant use of public funds has thrown under the spotlight the whole issue of the role of the Speaker, to say nothing of the Speaker’s poor judgement. Bishop’s extreme partiality on the floor of the House (frequently raised by the Opposition, but barely warranting news headlines) in which the Speaker’s role should be an impartial umpire, has come to the fore.
